Anniversary messages when you're not soppy

For people who love each other and do not talk like a card. Why specific beats sweet, teasing as a love language, and the sincere line that is not soppy.

Specific beats sweet

No soulmates

You love them. You would not describe it as "to my soulmate", and if you wrote that they would ask who the card was from. The problem with anniversary cards is that the printed ones talk like that, and it leaves people who do not feeling as if the only choice is the soppy line or nothing. It is not. There is a third thing, and it is what you actually say to each other.

Answer in brief

Write one specific true thing about the two of you, in the voice you use across the kitchen table, and sign it the way you always do. Specificity is what sentiment is trying to fake: "you still make the tea wrong and I would notice if you stopped" is a love letter, and "to my soulmate" is a template. If teasing is how you talk to each other, tease; the affectionate insult is a love language, and they speak it. If you want to say something sincere, say the plain version and stop before it gets sweet. "Glad it's you" is the whole of it.

What do you write instead of romance?

The evidence. Romance is a claim about how you feel; evidence is a thing that happened, and the second is more convincing because it cannot be copied. "I love you more every day" could be written by anyone about anyone. "Eleven years and you still walk on the road side of the pavement" could only be written by you, and it says the same thing without saying it.

So do not reach for a feeling. Reach for a detail: a habit, a Tuesday, a thing they do that nobody else would notice. The noticing is the love. You do not have to name it.

Why does specificity beat sentiment?

Because sentiment is a description and specificity is a proof. When a card says "you are my everything", the reader has to take your word for it. When it says "you knew I'd want the window seat", the reader is the only person in the world who understands why that matters, and that is the feeling the soppy line was trying to produce. Specific lines also age well. In ten years "my everything" will read as a card, and the window seat will read as that train.

The rule is the same one that holds for every card on this blog. One line that could only be about them. On an anniversary it is one line that could only be about the two of you.

Is the affectionate insult really a love language?

Yes, and for a lot of couples it is the main one. Teasing is intimacy with the sentiment taken out and left for the other person to put back, and they do, every time. "Happy anniversary. Still not sure what you see in me, but I'm not asking." That is a joke, and it is also the most sincere thing in the card, because the joke only works if the answer is obvious to both of you.

The test is whether you would say it to their face and get a laugh. If you tease each other daily, a card that suddenly does not is the odd one. If you do not, do not start on the anniversary.

What if they are soppy and you are not?

Meet them halfway, in your own voice. They want to hear that you feel it; you do not want to write a card that sounds like a stranger. The line that does both is the plain sincere one: "I don't say this stuff. Glad it's you." The first sentence is honest about who you are, and the second is the feeling, said once and without decoration. A soppy partner will read that as more than a page of hearts, because they know what it cost you.

What does not work is a joke and nothing else. If they are the soppy one, they will notice the absence, and one plain line is not a big price.

What is the line that is sincere without being sweet?

Short, past tense or present, no adjectives. "Glad it's you." "Still would." "Good call, that day." "Eleven years. Not bored yet." Each says the whole thing and stops before the point where a card would say it. The sweetness is in what is left out, and both of you know it is there.

What does it look like, written out?

Five, for five couples. Take the shape, not the words.

Eleven years and you still walk on the road side of the pavement. Happy anniversary.

The evidence

Happy anniversary. Still not sure what you see in me, but I'm not asking.

The affectionate insult

I don't say this stuff. Glad it's you. Happy anniversary.

They are soppy, you are not

Happy anniversary. Good call, that day in the rain.

The callback

Eleven years. Not bored yet. x

The short one

Each is one line and each is a love letter. None of them contains the word love, and none of them needs to.

What not to write

  1. "To my soulmate." Or "my rock", "my everything", "my better half". They are the card's words, not yours, and they will ask who wrote it.
  2. A list of what they mean to you. Twelve things blur. One thing lands. Pick the smallest one.
  3. A quote about love. Somebody else's sentence in the one card that was meant to be yours.
  4. Counting the years as an achievement. "Eleven years and still going strong" reads like a car. The number is fine; the medal is not.
  5. A joke and nothing else, when they are the soppy one. They will read the absence. One plain line costs you nothing.
  6. Explaining that you're not soppy, at length. "I know I'm not good at this sort of thing but" is a paragraph about you. One sentence, then the thing.
  7. Anything you would not say across the table. The card is the table. Same voice.
Nice try. But no.

Related situations

  • You do not know what to write in any card. A greeting, one line that could only be about them, a wish. On an anniversary the middle line is about the two of you.
  • A funny message that does not sound copied. The four shapes that work, and the affectionate insult is the first of them.
  • It is late. One word covers it, and for the person you live with, hand it over rather than post it.
